Teaching as Inquiry

“Recognising and spreading sophisticated pedagogical practice across our community so that students learn in better and more powerful ways...”

The Manaiakalani Community of Learning is working together on this task using the expertise existing in of our community of learning.

In 2018 for my inquiry I have selected the following CoL achievement challenge
(delete this instruction and remaining challenges below)

#1. Raise Māori student achievement through the development of cultural visibility and responsive practices across the pathway as measured against National Standards and agreed targets for reading Years 1-10 and NCEA years 11-13

#2. Lift the achievement for boys' writing Years 1-10

#3. Increase the achievement of Years 7-10, in reading, writing and maths, as measured against National Standards and agreed targets

#4. Increase the achievement of Years 1-10 learners, with a focus on Years 7-10,  in reading, writing and maths, as measured against National Standards and agreed targets.

#5. Improve the achievement of students with additional needs in the learning areas of English/key competency using language symbols and texts

#6. Lift the achievement in maths for all students years 1-13

The teaching as inquiry framework I will be using in 2018 has been specifically co-constructed for Manaiakalani schools using our familiar Learn Create Share structure.
The elements in this framework share close similarities with other models New Zealand teachers use.

I will be labelling my posts as I update my inquiry throughout the year to make the content easy to access.

  1. Joanne how is your inquiry going and where can I see your journey? This blog was a record of your ups and downs, successes, tweaks, reflections, monitoring, evaluating and what is the intended change for a learner? Restate your inquiry question and your theory of action/chain of events. How are they experiencing the intervention? How will they engage differently? How will you know? How will you know whether the intended ‘treatment’ (sorry about the language) was the same as the actual treatment. How will their outcomes begin to shift? How will you know?
Describe how you will collect information about the implementation of your changed practices/intervention (so it is clear what you doing differently)Identify informal & formal ways you are monitoring the effects of your changed practices/intervention on learner outcomes. Explain the reflections and tweaks you are making along the way (Don’t wait to the end of your inquiry cycle and find it didn’t work. Describe how you will keep a record of each of the above in a manageable way (‘cos you won’t otherwise remember all your many micro-decisions and why you made them). Perhaps you have put your notes and posts elsewhere, but would like to see where you are up to and if you need any help. What is happening with your tool? kia kaha Joanne
